communion1Theme: His Body is our life

Today’s celebration of Corpus Christ is the Solemnity of the very center and heart of our Church and pivot of our faith. The Holy Eucharist is the center and heart of parish, the center and every baptized Catholic. Jesus Christ is fully present in the Blessed Sacrament. I know that some find it difficult to believe that bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Jesus. I can understand your doubts. We don’t see any change in the bread or wine. There is no difference in the taste; the bread still tastes like bread and the wine still tastes like wine. It is going against logic to say that the bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Jesus despite no change in appearance, yet in this mystery of faith, Jesus Christ is fully and wholly present.

Theme: The Eucharist is our life

In our village there was a 6-year-old boy named Kana who refused to go to school. Each day, despite his protests, his mother walked him to school, but as soon as she left him, he ran back home only to have his mother bring him back to the school once again. This scenario played itself out for several days, with Kana continuing to refuse to stay in school and his parents refusing to acquiesce to his desires. No inducement or threat could convince Kana to change his mind. Finally, in desperation, the boy’s parents took him to their Catechist, who said, ‘If the boy won’t listen to words, bring him to me.’ When the parents brought their son to the Catechist, he said not a word. He simply picked up the boy and held him to his heart for a long time. Then, without speaking a word, he set him down. What words alone could not accomplish, a silent embrace did. Not only did Kana go to school willingly, he went on to become a great scholar and a priest.

Theme: I am the Bread of Life

All of us together form the Church. Today’s celebration of Corpus Christ is the feast of the very center and heart of our church, the center and heart of our faith, and the center and heart of parish, the center and heart of the lives of each of us. He is in the Blessed Sacrament.

I know that some find it difficult to believe that bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Jesus. I can understand your doubts. We don’t see any change in the bread or wine. There is no difference in the taste; the bread still tastes like bread and the wine still tastes like wine. It is going against logic to say that the bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Jesus despite no change in appearance. With our intellect we can understand that God must be keeping the universe together, that God is the origin of everything, but reason will only take us so far. Then we need to add faith to our reason and intellect. As Paul says, in the Christian life we go by faith and not by sight see 2 Corinthians 5:7. We need to be humble and open to God performing a miracle every day in this Church, the miracle of the Eucharist.
