St. Charles Lwanga

Charles Lwanga was a Muganda by tribe from Buddu county (Birinzi village) but there are mixed findings about his parents. Some writers say, his parents are unknown, others say Kaddu was his father, and yet others that he was an adopted son of Kaddu.

Charles was chief of royal pages in the king Mwanga's palace. He was baptised by Pere Giraud on 15-11-1885 (the day Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe was beheaded and burnt). After the death of Balikuddembe, Charles became the head of Christians.

He was burnt to death in a slow painting fire under a Ggirikiti tree( Erhrina Abyssinica) at Namugongo where the Martyrs Shrine is standing. He died on Thursday 3rd June 1886 (on ascension day) at the age of about 25.

As he was being burnt, Charles said to Ssenkoole, "It is as if you are pouring water on me. Please repent and become a christian like me".

Lwanga is the patron of youth and Catholic action.

 

St. Matthias Mulumba Kalemba

St. Matthias Mulumba Kalemba was a Musoga by tribe from Bunya county in Busoga. His biological parents, however, are not known. But his adopted father was; Magatto of Edible or Cane Rat Clan (Musu).

Mulumba was the oldest of all the martyrs because by the time of his martyrdom he was about 50 years old. He was assistant to county chief of Ssingo called Mukwenda.

He was baptized on 28 May 1882 by Pere Girault.

Mulumba died the most brutal and longest lingering death of about 3 days (from the afternoon of Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th May 1886). His limbs were cut off from his body, strips of flesh were cut from his back and left to die at Old Kampala.

 

St. Noe Mawaggali

St. Noe Mawaggali was a Muganda by tribe from Ssingo county and of Bush-Buck (Ngabi) clan -Tragelaphus Scriptus. His father was Musazi and mother Meme. He was potter to the county chief of Ssingo (Mukwenda) and maker of the earthenware.

Mawaggali was baptized on 1st November 1885 by Pere Lourdel.

King Mwanga II commissioned Mbugano, one of the executioners to kill all Christians at Mityana. When Mawaggali exposed himself, Kamanyi, Mukwenda�s man, aiding Mbugano speared him (Mawaggali) to death. His body was devoured by village savage dogs. This merciless act took place on the morning of Monday 31st May 1886 at Mityana (Luke Baanabakintu�s home where he was teaching catechist). He died at the age of 35.

Mawaggali is the patron of workers, the poor, artists and technicians.

 

St. Kizito

St. Kizito was the youngest of all the Martyrs who died at the age of 14.

He was a Muganda by tribe born at Waluleeta, Bulemeezi county. His father was Lukomera and mother Wangabira of Civet Cat Clan. He belonged to the Lungfish (Mamba) clan -Protopterus.

Kizito was a page of the inner private courts of King Mwanga II whom fellow pages credited for his love and determination to follow Christ.

Kizito was baptized on 26th May 1886 by Charles Lwanga and was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886.

He is the patron of children and Primary Schools.

St. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe

St. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe was the head of Catholic Church during the absence of Catholic Missionaries and a leader all Christians.

Balikuddembe was a Muganda by tribe from Mawookota county and of Giant Rat (Kayozi) clan -Cricetomys Emini Proparator. His father was Njuba-eseta and mother Kajwayo (Munyoro). He was a page and personal attendant on King Muteesa I and Majordomo under King Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 30th April 1882 by Pere Lourdel. Balikuddembe was the first Martyr to be killed on. He was beheaded and thrown onto a heap of burning firewood and burnt at Nakivubo, now St Balikuddembe Market (formerly known as Owino Market).

Balikuddembe is the patron of politicians and chiefs. Other names: Batuuka, Lukajuju.

St. Denis Ssebuggwawo

St. Denis Ssebuggwawo (Musajja-mukulu) was by tribe a Muganda from Bulemeezi county. His father was Kajansi and mother, Nsonga ( Musoga). Ssebuggwawo was from Edible or Cane Rat (Musu) clan - Thryonomys Swinderianus.

He was a page of king Muteesa I and a page in personal attendance of Kabaka Mwanga II.

Ssebuggwawo was baptized on 16th November 1885 by Pere Lourdel. He was tortured and speared by king Mwanga II before handing him over to executioner Mpinga Kaloke on the evening of Tuesday 25th May 1886. On Wednesday morning 26th May 1886, Mpinga ordered his two men; Matembe and Mulyowa to hack the boy of 16 years into pieces. Ssebuggwawo was first beheaded before he was hacked into pieces at Munyonyo.

He is the patron of choirs and musicians.

St. Pontian Ngondwe

St. Pontian Ngondwe was a Muganda by tribe from Kyaggwe county and of White Egret (Nnyonyi) clan -Bubulcus Lucidus. His father was Birenge and mother Mukoomulwanyi (Buffalo Clan).

Ngondwe was a page of King Muteesa I and a palace guard of King Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 17th November 1885 by Pere Giraud. Pere Giraud gave him the name of Pontian, in honour of the martyred Pope whose feast occurred two days later, 19th November. He was speared to death a number of times by chief executioner, Mukaajanga. His head was cut off by the executioner, Ssittankya and other executioners hacked his body to pieces, which they scattered all over the place. He died on the evening of Wednesday 26th May 1886 at Ttaka Jjunge, near Munyonyo at the age of between 35 and 40.

Ngondwe is the patron of soldiers, policemen and militia.

St. Andrew Kaggwa

St. Andrew Kaggwa Muddu-aguma Mugoowa was a Munyoro by tribe from Bugangayizi county but his parents are not known as he was just captured from his home-land by Buganda raiders. He was the king Mwanga's bandmaster-General, the Mugowa.

He was baptized on 30 April 1882 by Pere Lourdel.

The day he met his death, he was arrested at his home and taken to Katikkiro (Chancellor) Mukasa who ordered the executioners to cut off his arm and take it to him before the Katikkiro could eat anything as a proof of Kaggwa's death. Kaggwa's arm was first cut off and taken to Mukasa before he was beheaded and hacked to pieces at Munyonyo. He died in the afternoon of Wednesday 26 May 1886.

Kaggwa is the patron of Catechists, Teachers and Families.

St. Athanasius Bazzekuketta

St. Athanasius Bazzekuketta is a Muganda by tribe. Though his county of origin is unknown, his father was Kafeero Kabalu Sebaggala and his mother Namukwaya (Buffalo Clan) Bazzekuketta was of Vervet Monkey (Nkima) clan -Cercopithecus Aethiopis Centralis.

He was a page under both king Muteesa I and Mwanga II and was in charge of King Mwanga's treasury.

He was baptized on 16 November 1885 by Pere Lourdel. On their way to Namugongo for execution, the prisoners (Martyrs) reached Nakivubo and Mukaajanga, the chief execitioner asked who among them would volunteer to be killed where their leader, Balikuddembe was killed. Bazzekuketta eagerly volunteered. He was at once speared to death and hacked to pieces. His last breathe was on morning Thursday 27th May 1886 when he was about 20 years of age.

Bazzekuketta is the patron of treasurers, banks and co-operatives.

St. Gonzaga Gonza

St. Gonzaga Gonza was a Musoga from Bulamoogi county. His parents are not known, though it is said in various writings that he belonged to Lion (Mpologoma) clan.

He was a page of the private courts under Muteesa I and a page of the audience hall under Mwanga II.

Gonza was baptized on 16th November 1885 by Pere Lourdel. On his way to Namugongo for execution with fellow Christians, Gonza who had bleeding legs due to chains stuck into his flesh collapsed at Lubaawo, about 4 miles to Namugongo. At this spot, because he could not move any more, Mukaajanga, the chief executioner speared him to death. It was on Thursday 27th May 1886. Gonza died at the age of about 24.

He is the patron of the prisoners and afflicted.

St. Luke Baanabakintu

St. Luke Baanabakintu a Muganda by tribe from Ggomba county. His father was Mukwanga and mother Kusuubiza of Seed Clan. Baanabakintu was of Lungfish (Mamba) clan �Protopterus.

He was a servant of Mukwenda, county chief of Ssingo and supervised the chief�s fisheries on Lake Wamala.

He was baptized on 28th May 1882 by Pere Girault. He was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886 at the age of between 30 and 35.

Baanabakintu is the patron of sailors, fishermen, merchants, students and blacksmiths.

St. James Buuzaabalyawo

St. James Buuzaabalyawo was a Muganda from Mawookota county. His father was Sebikejje but his mother is unknown. He was of Black and white Colubus Monkey (Ngeye) clan -Colobus Polykomos.

Buuzaabalyawo was the official keeper of the royal well (Kalindaluzzi) and second-in-command to Andrew Kaggwa, Bands Master General.

He was baptized on 15th November 1885 by Pere Giraud and was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886 at the age of between 25 and 30.

James Buuzabalyawo is the patron of Traders, Merchants and Co-operatives.

St. Gyavira Musoke

St. Gyavira Musoke was a Muganda from Busiro county, his father was Semalago but his mother is not known. He was of Lungfish (Mamba) clan �Protopterus.

He was a page of the audience hall of King Mwanga II.

Gyavira was baptized on 26th May 1886 by Charles Lwanga. He was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886 at the age of 17.

Gyavira is the patron of communication, traffic and travelers.

St. Ambrose Kibuuka

St. Ambrose Kibuuka Katikamu was a Muganda by tribe from Ssingo county. His father was Kisuule and mother Ampera. He was from Scaly Ant-Eater or Pangolin (Lugave) clan -Manis 'Tricuspis Treminckii.

He was page of the audience hall of king Muteesa I and Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 16 November 1885 by Pere Lourdel. Ambrose was also burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on Thursday 3 June 1886 at the age of 18.

He is the patronage Societies: Scouts, Guides, Young Christian Workers, Xaverians, T.C.W. etc.

St. Anatoli Kiriggwajjo

St. Anatoli Kiriggwajjo was by tribe a Munyoro. His parents and county of origin are not known as he was captured during the inter-kingdom wars and brought to the king's palace.

In the palace, he served as a page of the audience hall of both king Muteesa I and Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 16 November 1885 by Pere Lourdel. Kiriggwajjo was burnt in the Namugongo furnace on Ascension day, Thursday 3 June 1886 when he was 20years or more.

Kiriggwajjo is the patron of Dairy farmers and veterinary.

St. Achilles Kiwanuka

St. Achilles Kiwanuka was a Muganda by tribe from Ssingo county. He is from Scaly Ant-Eater or Pangolin (Lugave) clan. His father was Kyazze and mother, Nassaza Talidda of Civet Cat Clan.

He was a page of the audience hall of king Mwanga II.

He was baptised on 16-11-1886 by Pere Lourdel (Mapeera) Achilles was burned alive in the Namugongo furnace on Thursday 3 June 1886 (Ascension Day) at the age of 17.

He is the patron of Clerks, Press, Journalists and Writers.

St. Mbaaga Tuzinde

St. Mbaaga Tuzinde was a Muganda by tribe from Busiro county and of Lungfish (Mamba) clan - Protopterus. His father was Katamiza Waggumbulizi and mother Mmumanyi of Yam Fruit (Kkobe) Clan.

Mbaaga was a page of the audience hall of King Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 26th May 1886 by Charles Lwanga. He is remembered for standing firm despite pressures from relatives and chief executioner, Mukaajanga to make him renounce Christianity. He was clubbed to death before being placed on pyre of the burning furnace at Namugongo on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886. he was 17 years old by the time of his martyrdom.

Mbaaga is the patron of religious vocations ie seminaries, novices and aspirants. The National Seminary in Uganda is dedicated to him. (St. Mbaaga National Seminary Ggaba)

St. Mugagga Lubowa

St. Mugagga Lubowa was a Muganda by tribe from Mawookota. His father was Mazinga and his mother Nassubwa. He was of Leopard (Ngo) clan -Felix Pardus.

He was a page in the inner private courts of King Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 26th May 1886 by Charles Lwanga. He was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886 at the age of between 16 and 17.

Mugagga Lubowa is the patron of Clubs, Tailors and Community Development.

St. Mukasa Kiriwawanvu

St. Mukasa Kiriwawanvu was a Muganda by tribe from Kyaggwe county and of Sheep (Ndiga) clan - ovis. His father was Lumanyika and mother Malokuvaawo (Musoga).

He was a page of the audience hall of King Muteesa I and Mwanga II.

Unlike all other Martyrs, Mukasa died before he was baptized. He was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension Day, Thursday 3rd June 1886 at the age of between 20 and 25.

Mukasa is the patron of hotels, restaurants, bars and all kinds of public recreations.

St. Adolphus Mukasa Ludigo

St. Adolphus Mukasa Ludigo was a Munyoro by tribe from Mwenge-Toro . His parents are unknown because he was captured in the inter-kingdom wars and brought to the palace as a captive.

He served as a page of the audience hall of king Muteesa I and Mwanga II.

He was baptized on 16 November 1885 by Pere Lourdel (Mapeera). He was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on Thursday 3 June 1886 (Ascension day).

 Adolphus is the patronage of Farmers, Herdsmen and Hunters.

St. Bruno Sserunkuuma

St. Bruno Sserunkuuma was by tribe a Muganda from Buddu county. His father was Namunjulirwa and mother Ndibaliza. He was of Sheep (Ndiga) clan -Ovis.

He was a page of king Muteesa I and a soldier (palace guard) of king Mwanga II He was baptized 15 November 1885 (the day their leader, Joseph Balikuddembe died) by Pere Giraud.

He was burnt alive in the Namugongo furnace on the Ascension day, Thursday 3rd June 1886 at the age of 30.

Sserunkuuma is the patron of; Penitents, tempted to lust of flesh, to drinking, violence and unlawful marriages.

St. John Mary Kiwanuka Muzeeyi

St. John Mary Kiwanuka Muzeeyi was the last Catholic Martyr to be killed by king Mwanga. He was a Muganda from Buddu county. His father was Bunyaga and mother Mukatunzi or Nnamalayo (Monkey clan). Muzeeyi was of Buffalo (Mbogo) clan-Buffalo pumilus.

He was a page of Kabaka Muteesa I and his special doctor (herbalist) without using witchcraft.

Muzeeyi was baptized on 1st November 1885 by Pere Lourdel (shortly before the death of Balikuddembe). He was beheaded on the morning of Thursday 27th January 1887 and his body thrown into Jugula swamp between Mmengo and Namierembe Hills. He was between 30 to 35 years by the time of his martyrdom.

Muzeeyi is the patron of doctors, nurses, hospitals and dispensaries.

Blessed Jildo Irwa

Blessed Jildo Irwa was born about 1902 by Tongpfur Daniele (father) and Atoo (mother) from Labongo Bar- Kitoba clan of Acholi

Irwa was baptized Jildo (short for "Ermenegildo") on 6th June 1916 by Fr. Caesar Gambaretto, a Comboni Missionary at the newly founded Catholic Mission of Kitgum. His godfather was Pasquale Omara of Gulu. He was confirmed on 15th October 1916.

He was speared to death on Sunday 18th October 1918 at Paimol, Kitgum district, Acholi, Northern Uganda.

Irwa is a patron of Catechists.

Blessed Okello Daudi

Blessed Okello Daudi was born about 1900. His father was Lodi and mother; Amona of Ongon Payira clan.

Okello was baptized on 6th June 1916 by Fr. Caesar Gambaretto, a Comboni Missionary at the newly founded Catholic Mission of Kitgum. His godfather was Firmino Mugenyi of Masindi. He was confirmed on 15th October 1916.

He was speared to death on Sunday 18th October 1918 at Paimol, Kitgum district, Acholi, Northern Uganda.

Okello is a patron of Catechists.
