The Holy Cross at Mbuya- Message by the Parish Priest Be the first to comment!

Today the 19th October 2014 World Mission Sunday, the Holy Cross that has been erected at Mbuya has been blessed by His Grace Archbishop Michael August Blume S.V.D, the Apostolic Nuncio in Uganda. The building of the Cross started on the 28th July 2013 after a brief meeting with Mr. Patrick Loti, the artist who had been recommended to me by the Provincial Superior of the Comboni Missionaries Fr. Silvester Hategek’Imaana to whom I had mentioned my desire to erect a cross in this Parish of Mbuya.

Why the Cross?

  1. To commemorate the 50 years since the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs.
  2. To commemorate 50 years since the first baptism at Mbuya as recorded in the registers of the Parish on 11th July 1964 by Fr. Giulian Quirino Mccj.
  3. The Cross was very important in the life of St. Daniel Comboni founder of the Comboni Missionaries who used to teach his missionaries that the works of God are born and grow at the foot of the cross.
  4. My 10 years experience of missionary life in Mexico influenced me greatly because I found the Mexican people with a strong devotion to the cross to the extent that wherever there is a motor accident on the road and a person dies, a cross is erected on that spot and people on their way they stop on that cross to say a prayer.

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:16

Jesus has been given to us by God the Father through the mystery of the cross and at Calvary this mystery became complete with the giving of the Blessed Virgin Mary to all of us by Jesus on the cross. Jesus saw his Mother and the disciple he loved standing there; so he said to his mother, “He is your son.” then he said to the disciple, “she is your Mother.” John 19:26-27

We at Mbuya we have been privileged to have the Blessed Virgin Mary as our Patron Saint. When the church of Mbuya was consecrated in 1970 by Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga, it was given the title of “Our Lady of Africa.” So all of us who pray in this church we benefit of her prayers and motherly care and we proudly call her our Mother.

The Blessed Virgin Mary on the cross at Calvary received the mission of taking care of the Church, the Church of all times and all places. She has been taking care of us during these 50 years since the Comboni missionaries set their foot on Mbuya Hill and we give glory and honor to God in thanksgiving. The Blessed Virgin Mary will now teach us to gaze at the cross, to adore the cross, to venerate the holy cross because those who venerate the holy cross shall be protected by the holy cross.

When Jesus was crucified, there were different reactions. There were a huge number of people that passed near the cross and did not have time to stop or did not want to stop and consider what was happening. There were also a good number of people that mocked Jesus with the words that we find in the Bible. “He saved others but he cannot save himself” there was also the mysterious person, the good thief who was able to receive Divine Mercy…Jesus said to him, “I promise you that today you will be in paradise with me”. Luke what is my reaction to this holy cross?

The heart of the church is bigger than ours. The church thinks about all humanity and wishes humanity all the blessings of God. Let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary teach us to adore the Cross the way mothers come with their small children on good Friday to teach them how to kiss the holy cross in adoration and veneration.

we would like to express my gratitude to the artist Mr. Patrick Loti whom God has blessed with a unique talent for accepting to share with us his talent, I would like to thank the Architect Augustus Takaheebwa, Eng. Francis Xavier Ggalabuzi, Eng. Matthias Hall, Eng. Thomas Mugyenyi, Mr. Jimmy Kwizeera, Mr. Francis Onyango, for your collaboration and wisdom during the construction of the cross and all of you Parishioners of Mbuya for your prayers and support. May the good Lord bless you?

Your servants.
