Our Lady of Africa Mbuya Parish is located near Bugolobi Township in Nakawa Division. It is about 5 km from the city Centre of Kampala. Mbuya Catholic Parish is a vibrant and diverse community made up of people from different parts of Uganda.
A brief History of the Parish
Our Lady of Africa parish was started by the Comboni missionaries founded by St. Daniel Comboni who were already working in Northern Uganda and had arrived at Mbuya- Kampala in 1960 at the invitation of the Bishop of Kampala, Rt. Rev. Vincent Billington, MHM. The Bishop donated to them 8 Hectares of land on which was constructed a small house and later a chapel to give pastoral care to the people from Northern Uganda arriving in Kampala at the time to search for employment.
However, it was on the 7th October, 1966 when the new Bishop of Kampala Emmanuel Nsubuga asked the Comboni Missionaries to start a parish.
In September 1968, the construction of the present church begun. The foundation stone was blessed by Pope Paul VI on his visit to Uganda in 1969. On 20th September, 1978, the newly built church was consecrated to God in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of “Our Lady of Africa.”
Today, the parish has got five Sub parishes namely St. Joseph Mukasa Balikudembe in Kinawataka, St. Paul in Banda, St. Zulia in Mbuya village, St. Andrew Kaggwa in Bugolobi and kiswa sub parishes. All these other than St. Andrew Kaggwa and Kiswa sub parishes have established chapels and masses conducted every Sunday. St. Andrew Kaggwa conducts mass every 1st Sunday of the month at Lidia macchi Youth Centre and Kiswa sub-parish is attached and prays at the parish
At the parish, four masses are conducted every Sunday i.e. at 7.00am, 9.00am, 11.00am and 5.00pm each with a capacity of over 1500 Christians attending with the first mass being conducted in Luganda.
