A Call to Conversion: Embracing the Spirit of Lent

By Fr. James Patrick Jjumba

Today marks a significant moment in the life of the Church as we begin our Lenten journey with the imposition of ashes. This ancient tradition, deeply rooted in Christian and Jewish practices, serves as a powerful reminder of our mortality and our call to repentance. The ashes, placed visibly on our foreheads, symbolize that we are sinners—but sinners who are ready to repent, to change, and to return to the Lord.

Lent: A Journey of Transformation

Lent is not just about feeling pity for our sins but it is about change. It is a time for renewal and faithfulness to the Word of God. The Prophet Joel echoes the Lord’s voice, calling us to return with all our hearts:

“Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn. Turn to the Lord your God again, for He is all-generous and compassionate.”

This message invites us to look inward, to reflect on our actions, and to seek a deeper relationship with God. True change begins within—it is not merely external acts of piety, but a transformation of the heart.

The Three Pillars of Lent

The Church presents us with three essential pillars to guide our Lenten journey:

  1. Fasting – Not just abstaining from food, but also from things that consume our time unnecessarily, such as excessive social media or television. True fasting should lead us to self-discipline and generosity, helping us to sacrifice for others.
  2. Prayer – Lent calls us to deepen our prayer life, to seek solitude with God, and to find peace in His presence.
  3. Almsgiving – Our sacrifices should extend to helping others, ensuring that the resources we set aside benefit those in need.

These practices help us grow spiritually, drawing us closer to God and our brothers and sisters.

A Time for Reconciliation

Saint Paul urges us to reconcile with God. Lent is an opportunity to heal broken relationships, to forgive, and to restore harmony in our families and communities. This is the time to reach out, to mend what is broken, and to seek peace.

The Ashes: A Reminder of Our Mortality

As we receive the ashes, we are reminded that we are dust, and to dust, we shall return. This humbling reality encourages us to live purposefully, to depend on God, and to prepare for eternal life.

May this season of Lent be a time of true conversion, renewal, and deeper faith. Let us embrace this sacred journey with open hearts, seeking God’s grace and mercy.

The Lord be with you.
