Friends, All Souls Day is a day to remember and to pray for all those who have died; our family, friends, and those who have no one to pray for them, that they would pass through the purification of purgatory and enter into heaven. This is also a day for us to remember our own mortality, that we are on a very short pilgrimage through this life on our way to the next, and how we live now determines what comes next for us. The Masses we celebrate today are prayers to ask God for forgiveness on behalf of our deceased brothers and sisters.
Friends, why do we pray for our deceased loved ones? Why do we have this celebration today, the Commemoration of All Souls? Why do we dedicate the month of November to praying for the dead? Why do we have funeral Masses? We do all these things because we believe in the power of prayer. We believe that our continual entreaty to God to bring our loved ones to peace will prepare them to bear the fullness of His Love in heaven. We pray because we believe in love. We believe that true love, the love that flows from God and returns to Him, true love remains forever. We sincerely loved the members of our family, our friends, and all who have died. And we still love them. This love, which is looking for nothing other than to express itself, is sacrificial love. It is loving as Jesus loved. We are not expecting anything in return. We just want to express our love for them. We do this through prayer. And God hears our prayers and sees the love motivated by those who have died. Some of these loved ones are fully united to Him now. They are the saints, be they canonized by the Church, babies and little children, or older children, Teens, and adults, all who died with lives so pure, so sincere, that they are ready to endure the blaze of His Love.
Friends, All Souls’ Day reminds us that life does not end with death. It helps us think about those who have passed away and how we are still connected to them. We believe that death is not the end, but a journey to be with God. For some, this journey involves a time of purification in Purgatory. Our prayers can help these souls move closer to Heaven. This day is important because it teaches us to pray for others, even after they have died. Praying for the dead is an act of love. It shows that we care for their souls and want them to be at peace with God. By remembering to pray for those who have gone before us, we continue to show them love and support. All Souls’ Day also helps us think about our own lives. It is a reminder that one day we will face death too. All Souls’ Day helps us live with more purpose and encourages us to focus on things that matter, like our relationship with God and how we treat others. Life is a gift, and we should use it well.
Friends, All Souls’ Day reminds us of hope. We believe in eternal life, and that gives us hope for the future. Even if we face suffering or loss, we can trust that God has a place for us in Heaven. Let us remember and pray for our beloved dead and for those who have no one to remember or pray for them. Let us keep our own death before our eyes, remembering how temporary this earthly life is, and let us turn our hearts back with renewed devotion to the One who made us and gave Himself up for us, that we might be united with His eternal love now and in the life to come. We need not fear death because of the victory and resurrection of the Son of God. This day is not just about remembering the dead, but also about trusting in God’s promise of eternal life. The Lord be with you …may the Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I wish you a blessed Sunday and a fruitful new month of November ahead of you.
