Friends, today is a special day for all of us. We give thanks to God for today’s celebrations, both of which are great sources of blessings. First, for the gift of a new year 2026 and for the gift of a precious mother to accompany, comfort, and intercede for us throughout this year. The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God celebrates Mary’s special place in God’s plan. It honors her as the mother of Jesus, who is both fully human and fully God. This feast reminds us that through her yes, God entered our world to bring love, mercy, and peace. This day invites us to reflect on the deep connection between Mary and her Son. Her trust in God shows the beauty of faith and obedience. She cared for Jesus with a mother’s love, guiding Him in His early years. Her example encourages us to welcome God’s work in our own lives with the same openness. The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God also comes as we begin a new year. It gives us a moment to pause and seek Mary’s help in following her Son more closely. Through her care and prayers, we find comfort and hope as we walk into the days ahead, trusting that God is with us. The readings of today, gives a traditional blessing, tells how Jesus was born of Mary to save us and the shepherds visited the Holy Family. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of Mary, the Mother of God.
Friends, our first reading of today is a very important new year’s blessing direct from God to us, his people. It is a sign of God’s faithfulness, and His willingness to work with us this year. Hence, through His blessings, God has equipped us for the journey ahead this year. All we need to say is a resounding amen to this blessing and walk justly with God this year. While, in the second reading of today, Paul recounts the incarnation of God in Mary. That is, how God took flesh in the Blessed Virgin Mary. Paul reminds us of our sonship by participation and our adoption as children of the same Father with Christ. He also reminds us that by the same adoption, we are children of Mary, the Mother of God. We also learn that we are adopted as God’s children. Through Jesus, we are no longer bound by the law but are part of God’s family. This adoption is more than a legal status; it is a call to a close relationship with God. We can call Him “Abba, Father” just like Jesus did. The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, invites us to live as true children of God. We are called to recognize our new identity and live in the light of God’s love. As we honor Mary, we are encouraged to deepen our relationship with God and follow her example of faith and obedience.
Friends, the gospel of today, simply teaches us that Mary fulfilled her role as a Mother toward her son. She conceived and nurtured him with love and tenderness. She equally accompanied him through every step and stage of his life even till his death on the cross. In other words, not only did she give birth to Jesus, Mary helped Him to accomplish God’s plan for humanity. Through this, she presents herself as the epitome and model of good motherhood. Brothers and sisters, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, gives us a chance to honor Mary’s essential role in bringing Jesus into the world. Her faith and obedience set a powerful example for all believers. As we reflect on her life and her impact on our faith, we are encouraged to deepen our own relationship with God and to live with the same trust and openness that Mary showed. The Lord be with you …may the Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I wish you a happy new year full of God’s blessings.
