Mbuya Parish Celebrates the Election of Pope Leo XIV

On May 8, 2025, the Catholic Church witnessed a historic and spirit-filled moment as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th Bishop of Rome, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

At 6:09 p.m. Rome time, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling to the world that the College of Cardinals had chosen a new pope to succeed Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. Joyful cheers erupted from thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square as the bells of the basilica tolled in confirmation. The excitement was palpable as the faithful awaited the announcement of the new Holy Father.

At approximately 7:25 p.m., Pope Leo XIV appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the protodeacon of the College of Cardinals, proclaimed the joyous news in Latin:
“Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!”
(“I announce to you a great joy: We have a Pope!”)

Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV is a member of the Order of St. Augustine and also holds Peruvian citizenship. He served as a missionary and pastor in Peru for over twenty years and most recently held the role of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, where he oversaw the global appointment of bishops. His deep pastoral experience and international perspective highlight his dedication to unity and service across the global Church.

By choosing the name Leo XIV, the new pope pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, who is especially remembered for his encyclical Rerum Novarum on social justice and the dignity of labor. This name choice signals Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to continuing the Church’s mission in advocating for the poor, the marginalized, and the dignity of all people.

In his first address to the faithful, Pope Leo XIV offered a warm and simple message:
“Peace be with all of you!”
He emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and bridge-building within the Church and the world. His words and gentle demeanor point to a papacy rooted in compassion, dialogue, and inclusivity, echoing the pastoral spirit of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

As Our Lady of Africa church, Mbuya Parish, we join the global Catholic community in offering our prayers for Pope Leo XIV. May his pontificate be marked by wisdom, courage, and a renewed zeal for evangelization and communion.
