Vatican City, Wednesday, April 23, 2025
This morning at exactly 9:00 AM, the body of the late Pope Francis was solemnly transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, where he will lie in state until his funeral on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM.
The transfer was marked by a deeply moving and prayerful procession, attended by members of the College of Cardinals, clergy, religious men and women, and faithful from around the world who have traveled to Rome to pay their final respects. Bells tolled mournfully across the Vatican as the late Pontiff’s body was carried into the basilica — a place that has witnessed centuries of Church history.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis made history as the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit pope, and the first to take the name Francis, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. His papacy was marked by a tireless dedication to the poor, ecological justice, interfaith dialogue, and pastoral compassion.
Faithful around the world are now invited to visit St. Peter’s Basilica during these days of mourning to venerate the beloved shepherd of the universal Church. The Vatican has arranged for extended visiting hours to accommodate the expected influx of pilgrims and dignitaries.
The funeral Mass on Saturday will be presided over by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, in keeping with the Pope Emeritus’ wishes for a humble and prayerful farewell. Heads of state, religious leaders, and countless faithful are expected to gather for what will be a historic and deeply emotional occasion.
Here at Our Lady of Africa Catholic Church, Mbuya Parish, we unite in prayer with the universal Church, giving thanks for the life and legacy of Pope Francis.
